Your standing in your kitchen drying off a plate and talking with a friend when the plate suddenly slips and falls to the floor. “Crash” it shatters on the floor. What a horrible mess but even worse, it was a plate from your Grandmothers dinnerware set that she passed down to you. Luckily if you know what you are looking for, finding a replacement for that plate shouldn't be a daunting task and should be relatively inexpensive.

What's going to make your replacement china search go smoothly? Knowing what you are looking for! There are several types of plates used in most china and crystal dinnerware sets and if you know the type of plate you are searching for, your search will be so much easier.

In most dinnerware sets you will often find the following plates:

Dinner Plate – This is a larger plate used during dinners or suppers to serve the main course or entree of a meal. Dinner plates usually range in size from 9” to 11” wide. Older China & Crystal sets often feature Dinner Plates that are on the smaller end of the range.

Luncheon Plates – This is a Medium to Large plate that is used during lunch or luncheons to serve the main course or entree. Luncheon plates usually range in size from 8” to 9.375” wide. They are usually smaller than Dinner Plates with the reasoning that lunches usually consist of smaller meals than dinners.

Salad Plates – This is a medium sized plate used to serve salads and is used during both lunches and dinners. Salad plates usually range in size from 7” to 8.5” wide.

Bread Plates – This is a smaller plate that is used to server bread with meals. This bread could be a piece of bread, rolls or biscuits. The plates provide a space where you can lay your bread out and add butter, jellies or jams. Bread plates usually range in size from 5.75” to 7.25” wide.

Once you identify the type of plate you are looking for, it will be that much easier to find it.
